Where to go & what to see?

Assuming you're traveling to China, you'll discover that you won't see everything you want to see on a single trip.

On your first travel to China, the must-visit cities are Beijing, Xi'an, Guilin, Suzhou and Shanghai plus Chongqing where to board Yangtze River Cruise, and the must-see attractions are: 
in Beijing: the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Tian'anmen Square, Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven, Hutong tour, 2008 Olympic Site, and Silk Alley for shopping, Peking roast duck for local flavor and Peking Opera for evening entertainment;
in Xi'an: Terra Cotta Army, Giant Wild-goose Pagoda and Shaanxi Provincial Museum;
in Guilin and Yangshuo: Li River cruise to Yangshuo through mountains and hills, Elephant Trunk Hill, Reed-flute Cave, Western Street and maybe sky-open opera on Li River;
in Shanghai: the Bund, Yuyuan Garden, Town-god Temple Bazaar and Shanghai Museum;
in Suzhou: Suzhou gardens, cruise on the Grand Canal, silk mill; and,
on Yangtze Cruise to see the amazing Three Gauges: Wu, Xiling and Qutang Gorge.

For experienced travelers to China, you may choose deeper travel destinations to:
Shanxi to see real central China's tradition and culture; 
Tibet to foot on the World Roof; 
Yunnan in Southwest China to see Lijiang and Dali; 
or just choose expanded places next to major cities such as Wolong near Chengdu to see the Giant Panda in the National Nature Reserve and participate in a volunteer program; Chengde Mountain Resort near Beijing, Mt. Huangshan near Shanghai, Jiuzhaigou near Chengdu.
